Crawley Town striker anxious to hit the ground running at Billingshurst

Striker Matt Harrold can’t wait to pull on a Crawley Town shirt for the first time when Reds open their pre-season fixtures at Billingshurst on Friday night.

Matt, one of nine summer signings made so far by John Gregory, says the squad have enjoyed hard but rewarding sessions on the training pitch since the squad reported back on June 30, but they are looking forward to some competitive action.

He said: “We have worked hard so far but it has still been enjoyable. They have been long days with double sessions but the programme (Head of Medical and Sports Science) Niall Clark has put together has been really interesting. We’ve still done plenty of hard running but it’s been sensible and we are now working on pattern of play.”

With so many new faces Matt admits it has taken a few days for the squad to get to know each other, but he believes JG has put together a hard-working and close-knit group.

“A lot of us are in the same boat in terms of being new to the club and it takes a few days to start getting to know each other. I think it’s a hard-working group though and the banter is starting to flow which is good.”

The manager will give all nine new faces as well as several trialists an opportunity on Friday and Matt is looking forward to playing again.

“Pre-season is all about gearing yourself up for the first game at Barnsley on August 9. It’s about progressing in terms of fitness and teamwork but obviously we all want to do well. We’re all the same in as much that we are hungry and ambitious to perform for Crawley Town.

“Personally, being back in League One is a great opportunity and challenge for me and I am really looking forward to what lies ahead.”
