Jimmy joins Crawley Town from Stevenage

The club are delighted to confirm that midfielder Jimmy Smith has joined the Reds from Stevenage for an undisclosed fee on a two-year contract.

The 27-year-old Londoner, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or in wide positions, is John Gregory’s first signing as he rebuilds the squad for the 2014-15 League One campaign.

Jimmy began his career in the youth teams at Chelsea and after playing regularly for the reserves he made his first-team debut in May 2006 against Newcastle.

Over the next three seasons, Jimmy played on loan at QPR, Norwich and Leyton Orient before joining the O’s permanently in 2009. He went on to play 189 times for the club before moving to the Lamex Stadium last season when he made 49 appearances for Stevenage and scored three goals.

John Gregory said: “I first knew Jimmy when I was at QPR and I’m delighted he is now going to be playing for me.

“He’s an aggressive, energetic midfielder player and I like his attitude. He’s a warrior and he galvanizes the players around him. He’s got a lot of experience at this level and I think he’s capable of even more and I’m delighted he’s coming to Crawley because I think he can really improve our squad.”

Jimmy played against Reds in both meetings last season and is delighted to be joining the club.

He said: “I have worked with John before and I’m delighted to be here and I’m looking forward to playing under him again.

“I enjoyed my time at Stevenage and it’s disappointed that it ended in relegation but this is a great new challenge for me and I can’t wait for June 30 and the start of pre-season training so I can meet the other lads and get cracking.”
