Smith relishes quick turnaround ahead of Walsall game

Midfielder Jimmy Smith says the squad are relishing the quick opportunity to put two bad results behind them when Reds take on Walsall on Tuesday at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

Having lost 4-1 to Peterborough in our last home game, Reds went down 5-3 at Notts County on Saturday.

There is now a quick turnaround before we face Dean Smith’s Saddlers, a game where season ticket holders can claim two free tickets to bring along friends or family.

Jimmy said: “The boys were back in on Sunday and we have talked about the areas we need to improve on Saturday’s performance.

“The defending wasn’t like us. Before Peterborough we’d kept eight clean sheets and been hard to beat. We have to get back to that standard.

“Going forward on Saturday we looked a threat and I thought we scored three very good team goals. It’s just getting that balance right but first and foremost we have to be hard to beat.

“Personally, I’m pleased we’ve got a game on Tuesday. It’s a quick turnaround but when you lose a game you don’t want to have to wait a week to put it right. I think the other lads feel the same. We know we owe ourselves, the Gaffer and the fans a much better performance on Tuesday.”

Manager John Gregory expects striker Izale McLeod to be fit after he came off at half-time at Meadow Lane, having been involved in two collisions with County keeper Roy Carroll.

“Izale was struggling with his movement but we don’t think it’s anything serious,” said the boss.

“We’ve got to analyse where we want wrong, put it right between now and Tuesday and be prepared to go to war again against Walsall.”
