Henry Smith praised club's National Citizen Service programme
The club’s Community Foundation were delighted to welcome Crawley MP Henry Smith to the Checkatrade Stadium earlier this week when he presented certificates to the latest graduates of the club’s National Citizen Service programme.
What is NCS?
It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for 15-17 year olds that builds skills, confidence and team working whilst also helping them to get ahead for work and life.
The programme consists of 3 main elements:
Adventure - 4 days and 3 nights away from home at an outdoor activity centre participating in group activities such as high ropes, climbing and kayaking.
Discovery – Opportunity to develop new skills or enhance those young people already have, such as leadership, communication, public speaking and project planning.
Action – As a team young people design, plan and deliver their own social action project by meeting with local businesses and organisations. This project will then be delivered to have a positive
impact upon the local community.
Then they all get re-united and celebrate their achievements with friends and family at a graduation event.

Andre Benham, NCS Manager for Crawley Town Community Foundation said: “The young people of Crawley who participated in NCS this summer are not only a credit to their friends and families, but also to their local community for raising awareness of their selected causes and fundraising over £4,000 for a number of charities such as Crawley Open House, YMCA DLG Crawley Foyer, Save The Children, Olive Tree Cancer Support, St Catherine’s Hospice and The Springboard Project.
“They should all be very proud of themselves, and have certainly come out more confident and open minded young people with a greater appreciation for the issues in their community.”

“I’ve been pleased to award certificates at the end of each NCS programme the Community Foundation have run, and I’m delighted to see NCS in Crawley continue to go from strength to strength.
“A key part of each NCS programme is the social action project, which raises awareness of our local community and voluntary groups among young people. I’m grateful to the Summer 2016 NCS participants for their fundraising efforts on behalf of Crawley Open House and Save the Children.
“I welcome the Government’s continued commitment to ensure there’s a place on National Citizen Service for every young person. NCS gives opportunities to, and builds confidence for, Crawley young people as individuals, as well as making our town and world a better place.”
