Month Review: October

A look back at the third month of the campaign

25 May 2017

The Reds scored six goals in October and continued their unbeaten Checkatrade Trophy campaign.

October began with a 1-0 home victory over Blackpool thanks to Mark Connolly's second half header from a set-piece.

Three days later the side travelled to The Valley to face Charlton Athletic in their second group game of the competition. Goals in either half from Adi Yussuf and James Collins kept up the side's one-hundred percent record in the tournament.

Hartlepool United provided the next opposition the following weekend. Lewis Alessandra's headed goal in the first half came after Glenn Morris had superbly saved the forward's penalty, but the keeper was unable to prevent the striker from nodding in the rebound.

But the Reds rallied in the second period and James Collins' penalty meant the spoils were shared - the side could have even won the game late on as both Billy Clifford and Collins again went close.

Seven days later the side fell to their first defeat of the month in a 2-1 loss away to Cheltenham Town. Goals from Billy Waters and Adam Wright had the hosts two goals ahead before Kaby Djalo's long-range effort in the second period halved the deficit - despite his spectacular first goal for the club, the side could not prevent themselves from slipping to defeat.

A 0-0 stalemate with Accrington Stanley was played out the following weekend, before the month ended with a disappointing 3-1 away loss to Carlisle United. A first half treble from Jabo Ibhere, Jason Kennedy and Luke Joyce did the damage and Connolly's late close range effort - his second goal of the month, was in vain.
