Let's make it back to back wins

Boss John Gregory looks ahead to Gillingham

Reds haven’t won back to back League One games since defeating Barnsley and Swindon in the opening week of the season and manager John Gregory admits it would be a good time to repeat that feat at Gillingham today.

Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Walsall has put the squad in good heart for today’s trip to the Priestfield, but although Gillingham haven’t won for six games JG admits Reds will have to be at their best to back up the win over Walsall with another today.

He said: “We kind of got back to basics on Tuesday with a clean sheet after conceding nine in our previous two games and three points.

“Not surprisingly it’s made a big difference to the mood in the squad. Training’s been good in the last couple of days and picking the team today is going to be difficult. We have Keith Keane back and obviously someone like Conor (Henderson) is pushing for a start after his great goal against Walsall. It's the sort of selection problem I love.

“If we can back up Tuesday’s win with another today we’d go back into the top half of the table for the first time in a while and all of a sudden we’re looking upwards, with three of our four games in November at home.”

The Gills won a scrappy tussle 1-0 when the sides last met in March and despite their recent struggles JG expects another tough game today.

“Gillingham have had a few injury problems but on Tuesday they were a bit unlucky to lose to Preston, whose keeper made a couple of fantastic saves,” added John. “The crowd there really get behind them so we need to go and start well and build from there.

“I’m hoping we take a good number of fans with us as it’s not too far to go compared to a lot of our away games. The boys really feel there is an opportunity over the next few weeks to climb the table and produce the consistency that I know we are capable of. We need it to start today.”
