Reds get back to work

Hear from Matt Harrold as pre-season gets underway at Ardingly College

With the temperature nudging 33 degrees, it was a sweltering return to work for the Reds’ players when pre-season got underway at our new training base at Ardingly College.

Manager Mark Yates and assistant Jimmy Dack and the backroom staff put the squad through their paces in a series of fitness drills followed by ball work.

The players who are still under contract were joined by several trialists who are being monitored by Mark and Jimmy over the next few days.

Three players sat the session out. Lanre Oyebanjo is recovering from summer knee surgery, Gavin Tomlin has a groin problem and Lewis Young had a sinus operation last week which means he’s unable to do any running until Tuesday.

Among those back with the squad was striker Matt Harrold.

He said: “It was a good start, although it was very hot. The boys were glad to see the footballs out on day one although the days when the first few sessions in pre-season just consisted of running are over.

“It was good to meet the new lads and we’re now building up to the first friendly against Burgess Hill on July 15.”
