Mark Yates names defender as his new captain

Manager Mark Yates has today confirmed that defender Sonny Bradley will wear the captain’s armband at Oxford United on Saturday.

Sonny, who joined the club a year ago from Portsmouth, has led the side in a number of pre-season friendlies.

He said: “When the gaffer pulled me over I was a little bit surprised but I thought I might have a chance after doing it in the friendlies.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to have this honour and I hope I do it and the club proud. I have played under some good captains even though I’m relatively young still, including Josh Simpson last season. I know he was a bit of a legend at the club and hopefully I can have as good a career here as him and be captain for a very long time.”

After six weeks of preparation it all gets serious on Saturday at Oxford. Sonny added: “We can’t wait to get going. The squad has gelled really well and we have a nice mix of experience and youngsters. We’ve got our own targets and I think we are going to surprise a few people this season. I’m confident we can have a very good season.”
