Reds sign striker Pogba

4 February 2015

Guinea international here until end of the season

The club are delighted to confirm the signing of striker Mathias Pogba, who has joined us on a contract until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.

The 24-year-old, 6ft 2in forward is well known to Interim Manager Dean Saunders, having played under him at Wrexham when he came to England in 2010 after starting his career in the youth system at Celta Vigo before playing in French lower-league football for Quimper.

Matthias scored 16 goals in 71 games for Wrexham over two seasons before signing for Crewe at the start of the 2012-13 campaign.

He netted 21 goals in 63 appearances for the Alex, scoring twice on his debut for the club against Hartlepool in a League Cup tie and also on his League bow against Notts County. He was their top scorer with 16 goals in his debut season and has played three times previously against Reds, including the meeting at the Checkatrade.com Stadium last April which the Alex won 2-1.

In July, Mathias headed to Italy and had been playing for Pescara in Serie A prior to his return to England. He has been on trial with Dutch club Den Haag and Scottish Premier League Kilmarnock before heading to Crawley.

Dean said: “I have been looking for a striker to give us some more options and I’m delighted to have got Mathias to the club. He can play anywhere across the front or out wide so he gives us options.

“He’s got all the attributes and he has proved before he can score goals at this level. I think he could make a big contribution for us over the next few months.”

Mathias, who is the brother of Juventus star Paul Pogba, is a Guinea international and has played twice for his country. His twin brother Florentin, a defender, plays in France for St. Etienne.
