Newcastle goalkeeper arrives until January 2
The club are delighted to confirm that Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman is joining Reds on loan until January 2.
Freddie, who is the son of Magpies’ goalkeeping coach and former Crystal Palace keeper Andy Woodman, joined up with the squad today having just returned from Newcastle’s pre-season tour to the United States, where he played in their games against Portland Timbers and Sacremento Republic. He will play in tonight’s friendly against Nuneaton Town at Liberty Way.
Although the 18-year-old has yet to make a competitive first-team appearance for Newcastle, he is regarded as deputy to first choice Tim Krul and has also played for England Under-19s. He was also part of the England Under-17s squad which won the European Championship and was on the bench in the Premier League on several occasions last season.
Manager Mark Yates said: “We are delighted to have been able to bring one of the best young goalkeepers in the country to the club.
“The only thing Freddie lacks at the moment is experience in League football and that is what this loan spell with give him.
"He has all the attributes to become a top-class keeper and I have to thank Steve McClaren, Andy Woodman and everyone at Newcastle for letting us have Freddie for the first half of the season.”
