League 2 lowdown: Notts County

24 June 2015

How the men from Meadow Lane are shaping up for the new season

A look at how the men from Meadow Lane are shaping for the season.

Who’s in charge?

Former HFC Haarlem defender Ricardo Moniz goes into his first full season in charge of Notts County, with the hope he can guide the team back to League One. The 51-year-old began his playing career at PSV Eindhoven where he spent most of his career before finishing at Helmond Sport. He made a total of 273 appearances at club level. The Dutchman has since had various coaching roles, including a spell with Tottenham. Since focusing on management, Moniz (pictured) has had five different clubs in four years, including County whom he joined towards the end of last season.

Last season

The Magpies finished 21st in League One last year, one spot above the Reds, and were relegated on the final day of the campaign. A good start to the season, going 10 games unbeaten through September and October, wasn’t enough to save County, as they struggled to find consistency thereafter. Their cup form seemed to be affected as they were knocked out in the first round of Capital One Cup and FA Cup. County got to the area semi-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy only to be knocked out by Preston North End.

Summer plans

Three new faces have already been signed at Meadow Lane. The versatile Scot Bennett joined from Exeter on a two-year deal last month, young left-back Rhys Sharpe put pen-to-paper from Derby County and ex-Fulham man Robert Milsom has come in to bolster their midfield.

Previous meetings

Notts County have become a regular oppoent for Reds with six meetings overall. The Reds have managed to overcome County twice, most recently in a 2-0 win at home in April when Kelly Youga and Darren Ward were on target.

How far is it?

It is a 335 mile round trip to Meadow Lane, which we will make on Saturday, September 15th.
