Striker Rhys joins Reds

Murphy arrives on loan from Oldham Athletic

Reds have completed their second signing of the day by bringing in striker Rhys Murphy on a 93-day loan from League One side Oldham Athletic, subject to Football League ratification.

The 24-year-old, who was born in Shoreham, will be available for Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two game against Yeovil Town at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

Rhys started his career at Arsenal in 2009 and spent three years with the club, although he didn’t make a first-team appearance for the Gunners.

He had loan spells with Brentford and Preston and after leaving Arsenal and playing for Dutch club Telstar he signed for Dagenham & Redbridge.

Rhys was there for 18 months and scored 14 goals in 42 starts before joining Oldham in February, having missed much of the first half of last season following knee surgery.

He has made 14 appearances for the Latics, including three this season, and was on target last Saturday in their 5-1 home defeat to Peterborough.

Manager Mark Yates said: “I know all about Rhys, he can definitely score goals at this level.

“Goalscoring is definitely an area where we need to improve. Apart from Mansfield, which I hope was a one-off, we have made ourselves hard to beat but we do need to get more goals, not just from the strikers but all over the pitch.

“Rhys is 6ft 1in and not only is he good in the air he is also an excellent footballer with good movement and a physicality to his game which you need in League 2. He’s with us for three months and I’m confident he will make a good impression here if we c an get good service into him.”

Rhys will wear squad no. 39.
