A look at how the Pilgrims are progressing ahead of the new season

Our look ahead of next season’s opponents continues with Plymouth Argyle.

Who’s in charge?

Derek Adams comes into his first management role in England having previously worked north of the border. Adams’ playing career included 332 appearances and 80 goals for several clubs including Burnley, Aberdeen and Motherwell. He started his managerial career at Ross County and had two spells there, either side of a brief period on the coaching staff at Hibernian. Adams’ assistant is former Reds’ caretaker manager and coach Craig Brewster.

Last season

Former manager John Sheridan had promotion in his sights for Plymouth at the start of the season, which they nearly accomplished as they reached the play-offs only to be beaten 5-3 on aggregate by Wycombe Wanderers. Sheridan’s men were on the end of early exits in the JP Trophy to Coventry, Capital One Cup to Leyton Orient and the FA Cup to Sheffield United.

Summer plans

Plymouth have started their summer recruitment with the signing of Gary Sawyer from Leyton Orient. The defender started his career with the Pilgrims, making 95 appearances for the Pilgrims. Talks have taken place with Anthony O’Connor and Tyler Harvey, although they are yet to sign new deals. Adams is keen to add to his squad in the coming weeks once he has assessed the players he has inherited.

Previous meetings

We have only played the Pilgrims twice, both in our promotion winning 2011-12 season in League Two. Matt Tubbs scored both goals in a 2-0 victory in October 2011 and we also battled to a 1-1 draw at Home Park thanks to a goal from Pablo Mills.

How far is it?

It is a 460 mile round trip to Home Park, which we will make on October 3rd.
