Goalkeeper Paul Jones returns to Reds on loan

Reds have tonight completed the signing of goalkeeper Paul Jones, who is returning to the club on a 28-day loan from League Two rivals Portsmouth subject to Football League ratification.

Paul was a popular figure at the club after signing in May 2012. He was an ever present for the next two seasons in League One, making 105 league and cup appearances for Reds.

He then joined Portsmouth in 2014 and has made 45 appearances for the Fratton Park club.

The 29-year-old, who started his career at Leyton Orient and also played for Exeter City and Peterborough is closing in on 400 career games.

Manager Mark Yates said: “We’re delighted to have Paul with us and I’d like to thank (Portsmouth manager) Paul Cook for allowing us to take him on loan.

“Young Callum Preston has made great strides this season but we need to have two good keepers at the club and Paul brings massive experience and he is a big presence in the penalty area.

“And of course he knows the club, even if I doubt if there is anyone who is still here from the playing side from when he was here, which definitely helps."
