Defender special guest at Bristol City game

Damian Webber received a warm welcome from Reds’ fans on Saturday when he was special guest of the Former Players Association for the game against Bristol City.

Damian joined us from Worthing in the summer of 1989, having previously been with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Regarded as probably the classiest Reds' defenders of his era, he was equally at home at right back or centre half, or even in midfield, but in that first season he was used as a striker for some spells and responded with 20 league and cup goals, including one in the 1990 Sussex Senior Cup Final as we won the trophy for the first time.

He returned to full-time football to make 76 appearances for Millwall after joining them in 1994 before returning to the club for a brief spell in 1999. In total, Damian played 210 matches, scoring 34 goals.

Former Players Association chairman Tony Vessey said: “It’s great to see these familiar names from our past back at the club and being so well remembered by a lot of our supporters.”

We will have more special guests at the Leyton Orient game on March 21 including ex-Reds captain John Mackie.
