Tranmere game postponed

18 February 2014

Referee concerned about player safety

Tuesday night's Sky Bet League One game against Tranmere was called off at 6.20pm by match referee James Linington.

Mr Linington had concerns about an area of the pitch at the North Stand end in regards to player safety.

After consulting with the Football League he had the option of delaying kick off until 8.45pm to allow further work to be completed by the ground staff.

But after a further pitch check when the Tranmere squad arrived he decided the work would not be completed in time to get the pitch playable.

The club then offered to play the game on Wednesday night, but the offer was politely declined by Tranmere.

Remedial work on the poor parts of the pitch had been carried out since Saturday afternoon, following the postponement of the Carlisle fixture.

On Monday the covers were then put back on and these remained in place on parts of the pitch until after a prolonged spell of torrential rain cleared up at around 5pm this afternoon.

The club will now consult with Tranmere, as it has done with Carlisle, to offer travelling supporters compensation.

The club would like to apologise to all supporters and sponsors for the late postponement of the fixture and the inconvenience caused. Full refunds will be available if you bought a ticket for the fixture and cannot attend the re-scheduled game, which will be notified as soon as possible.
