Young Reds striker earns first cap

Young Reds striker Jonte Smith won his first international cap yesterday, as he lined-up for Bermuda against England C at the National Sports Centre in Hamilton, Bermuda.

England C proved too strong for the hosts, powering to a 6-1 win thanks to a second-half hat-trick from Forest Green Rovers striker James Norwood.

Smith started the game up front for the Bermudians and nearly marked his debut with a goal, but his free-kick from the edge of the area went over the bar.

England C, consisting of the nation’s best non-league players, raced into an early lead thanks to goals from Antoni Sarcevic and Marlon Jackson.

Bermuda responded just before half-time, skipper John Barry Nusum pulled a goal back before a strong second half performance by the visitors secured a comfortable victory.

Norwood grabbed his second-half hat-trick with goals coming in the 53rdand 69thminute before completing his treble from the penalty spot.

Andre Grey completed the rout in injury time, as Bermuda paid the price for some poor defending.

Reds manager Richie Barker was delighted his young striker gained some international experience.

Richie said: “Jonte works hard so I believe he deserves it. This experience at such a young age will no doubt develop him, so I’m very pleased.”
