Melville goal in vain

Defeat but good display pleases U-18s boss

Despite a spirited performance, the under-18s lost their opening game in the CG Cup 3-1 against Watford on Saturday.

The young Reds dominated the first half, having two goals disallowed before Watford took the lead through a free-kick against the run of play.

In the second half Reds pushed for an equaliser but they found themselves 2-0 down after an individual error was punished by the home side.

The Reds deservedly halved the deficit when Scott Melville got ahead of his marker to drill home a cross following some fine team play but it wasn't to be for Reds as Watford sealed victory with a goal late on.

Manager Steve Martin was full of praise for his team: “I was delighted with the performance” he said. “I thought the lads gave it everything. There were some individual errors I was disappointed with but after a poor performance last week the lads did everything we asked them to. Tom Cadman, who bearing in mind is just 15-years-old, did exceptionally well.”

Reds host Barnet at Oakwood on Saturday in their second Cup Group game.

Line up: Haigh, Smith, Robinson, Isaacs, Jackson, Cadman, Laing, Richefond, Anderson, Melville, Hector (sub: Fowodu)
