Dean's delight at shut-out

Crawley Town defender says hard work paid off

Dean Leacock believes hard work on the training ground paid off at Oakwell on Saturday when Reds kept a clean sheet in their League One opener and beat Barnsley 1-0.

Brian Jensen was faultless behind a solid back four in which Leacock ran goal scorer Izale McLeod close for the man of the match award.

Dean said: “Since I came to the club all we have worked on defensively is shape, shape, shape and I think we saw the benefits of that on Saturday. We looked solid and I thought fitness-wise we had a lot left in the tank.

“It’s a great start. We were actually disappointed at half-time not to be leading. We hit the post through Josh and got into some good positions but we got the goal and coming here to a side that were in the Championship last season and winning will give the whole squad a lot of confidence.”

Reds now switch their focus to Tuesday’s Capital One Cup tie against Ipswich at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

“We’re looking forward to that, especially after Saturday’s result,” said Dean. “At home we think we can give any side a decent game.”
