Izale: Solid point to start new era

29 December 2014

Striker happy to be back after frustrating month

Striker Izale McLeod believes new interim manager Dean Saunders has plenty to build on after his reign started with a battling 0-0 draw against Colchester.

Dean admitted afterwards that Reds had rode their luck and that he was disappointed that we didn't work Colchester keeper Sam Walker more.

But considering five players - four of them defenders - were out and two more players, Matt Harrold and Jimmy Smith, picked up knocks during the game it was a decent result.

Izale said: "You always get a positive response when the manager changes. The lads were all obviously gutted to hear that John (Gregory) is going into hospital for a major operation and we wish him all the best for a full recovery.

"But the new Gaffer has come in and I thought we got a decent point. We had a lot of injuries but we put a shift in and we looked well organised.

"It was great personally to be playing again after my suspension. We didn't create as much as we'd have liked in the game but we now have 12 days to work on things with the new Gaffer before we play MK Dons and I'm sure we will build on this start we've had in that game and beyond."
