Practice pays off for Crawley Town midfielder after stunning free-kick

Midfielder Conor Henderson says practice makes perfect after his stunning free-kick lit up Reds’ opening pre-season friendly win.

The former Arsenal and Hull player showed top-flight quality in the first half of Friday’s 9-0 win over Billingshurst with a stunning strike into the top corner. It was one of two goals Conor scored on his Crawley debut when he impressed in the first 45 minutes alongside Jimmy Smith.

Conor said: “Ever since I was a kid I have always tried to make free kicks and set pieces one of my strengths. You have to keep working and practicing but when they come of it’s pretty satisfying.”

The Republic of Ireland u-21 international will be back in action tonight when Reds go to another County League side, Oakwood, for a pre-season test (kick off 7.45pm).

John Gregory will again run the rule over several trialists but Conor says the squad is settling down after two weeks together.

“It was good to play together on Friday after a fortnight on the training ground. Nothing beats playing games though and we’re all looking forward to another run-out on Tuesday.”
