Squad re-build going well

11 June 2014

More new faces in the pipeline says JG

Manager John Gregory says his plans to rebuild the squad are progressing well.

The Gaffer has already signed four new players for the League One campaign, which kicks off on August 9, in goalkeeper Brian Jensen, defenders Lanre Oyebanjo and Ryan Dickson and midfielder Jimmy Smith.

And more new faces are in the pipeline, according to the boss.

John said: “I fully appreciate that our fans want to see lots of new faces and they’d prefer to see them as soon as possible. We have a lot of players to replace who left last season and that job has already started with the lads we’ve brought in so far.

“Look, I could go out tomorrow and sign 15 new players but would they be the players that we need? Absolutely not.

“The start of the new season is still two months away. We are working on a list of targets. Players are still hedging their bets a little bit, waiting to see what offers are out there so it does take time. Sometimes you think you have a deal finalised and there is a last-minute hitch but I can assure everyone we are working extremely hard as a club to get deals over the line.

“Will we have the full squad in place by the time pre-season training starts? Probably not because as everyone knows we are looking at the loan market as well and that means waiting for other managers to decide about the players we are interested in.

“It’s an ongoing process involving meetings, lots of phone calls and discussions and we’re confident that it will come to fruition.”

That work continues for JG, even though he is in Brazil at the moment to spend a couple of weeks at the World Cup and he will watch the opening game between Brazil and Croatia in Sao Paolo on Thursday.

“I’ve got a list of about 20 players at the World Cup I’m interested in,” laughed the boss. “Whether or not the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and the rest are interested in us is another matter!”
