Gwion nominated for Player of the Month

5 November 2014

Reds' winger up for League One award

Reds’ midfielder Gwion Edwards is one of the four nominations for the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month after an outstanding October.

The 21-year-old scored four goals against Coventry, Luton, Notts County and Gillingham and also received his call-up to the full Welsh squad for the first time for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cyprus.

The full list of nominees is:

Gwion Edwards (Crawley Town) - midfielder

Four goals from four games in a month when he received his first Wales call-up. Supplemented fine strikes against Notts County and Coventry City with fluid link-up play and outstanding versatility across a number of midfield positions.

Jonathan Forte (Oldham Athletic) - striker

Relishing his new lease of life at Oldham. Playing wide or through the middle, he demonstrated his finishing ability in one-on-ones to score twice against Coventry City, the highlight of a prolific month of five goals in as many games.

Dean Lewington (MK Dons) – left back

The only ever-present in a back four which conceded just one goal, his powers of organisation and captaincy were key to three clean sheets. Superb positionally and always prepared to throw his body in the way of shots.

Marcus Maddison (Peterborough United) - midfielder

The 21-year-old’s Football League career could not have started better. Moved more centrally, October saw him score four goals with sumptuous 30-yard free-kicks against Oldham Athletic and Barnsley and an impudent finish at Crawley Town.

Manager John Gregory said: “Gwion was outstanding for us last month and his good form continued on Saturday when he set up our goal against Crewe.

“He has added real consistency to his game this season along with his other attributes and it’s great that he’s been recognised with this nomination. He’s up against three very good players but we hope the judges give the award to Gwion.”

The winner will be announced on Friday.
