Mark: Setting the standard

Boss looks for a positive response against Dagenham on Saturday

Manager Mark Yates expects a positive response from Reds when they try to bounce back from successive League 2 defeats at home to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.

It’s been a fortnight since the 3-1 defeat at Carlisle, which came a few days after Reds went down 2-1 at home to Northampton.

And Mark anticipates the players to be fired-up to get back to winning ways against Wayne Burnett’s Daggers.

“Absolutely,” said the boss. “We’ve had to stew on a couple of bad results for a fortnight because we were out of the FA Cup when ideally we would have played the day after Carlisle to try and get that game out of our system.

“I’m desperate for tomorrow to come around and so I hope are the players. If their attitude in training since Carlisle is anything to go by they will be. They are chomping at the bit, though I wouldn’t expect any different from this group.

“They are an honest bunch who police themselves if you like. They didn’t do themselves justice against Carlisle and, to a certain extent Northampton, and it’s time to put that behind us. They know that.”

The Daggers have won at AFC Wimbledon recently and held Plymouth to a 1-1 draw and despite their lowly league position the boss expects them to cause problems.

“I’ve seen them four times and I don’t think their league position reflects the squad they have or their performances – Wayne is someone I know well and they will regard this as a winnable game," added the manager.

“We need to start strongly, play with a good tempo and get the home crowd behind us. We did that against Bristol Rovers three weeks ago and got a terrific win. That’s the standard we have to try and reach every single week.”
