Saunders works with squad at Oakwood

Interim Manager Dean Saunders has been getting down to work with the squad at our Oakwood training ground this week.

Dean took over from John Gregory on Saturday and was in the dugout 24 hours later when a patched-up Reds drew 0-0 with Colchester United.

He said: “We gave the lads a couple of days off after the Sunday game so they could spend time with their families because they had been away for most of Christmas.

“But it was back to work on Wednesday when we had a very good double session. I like working with players, being on the training pitch looking at them at work and putting my own ideas across.”

With no game until Saturday January 10, when Reds entertain MK Dons, the new manager has begun work on strengthening the squad with the January transfer window now open.

Dean said: “We will be looking to bring some bodies into the club but they have to be better than what we’ve already got. We can’t afford to just sign players for the sake of it.

“There are areas of the squad that need strengthening and if we can get our recruitment right I am confident performances will improve and we will start to climb the table.

"It’s still very tight points-wise in the bottom half of the table and a couple of wins can get you right up the league.

“We also had five players out through injury last Sunday against Colchester and in a squad of 22 that’s a lot of players missing. Hopefully we should have some of them back for the MK Dons game.”

Dean confirmed that Shaun Miller has returned to Coventry City at the end of his loan spell. "We wish Shaun all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts during his time here," said Dean.
