Dean updates on injuries

7 January 2015

Mixed news ahead of Saturday's game with MK Dons

Dean Saunders had mixed news to report on the injury front as Reds prepare for Saturday’s home game against MK Dons.

The new interim manager was without six players for his first game in charge against Colchester when a patched-up Reds drew 0-0.

The good news is that Sonny Bradley will be fit while Lanre Oyebanjo will return to training on Thursday.

Dean also expects Gwion Edwards, who came off in the second half against Colchester, to be involved, but Dean Leacock (groin) and Ryan Dickson (hernia) are doubts.

And midfielder Josh Simpson looks set to be sidelined for a further month as his hamstring injury is taking longer than expected to heal.

Dean said: “Josh needs to rest the hamstring for a further two weeks so the inflammation he’s experiencing can settle down so he’s probably going to be out for another month.”

The boss says the injury problems make it more important for him to try and strengthen the squad during the transfer window.

He added: “We had 12 fit pros training on Tuesday. It’s not a crisis because we should have a few more available on Saturday but we do need to get some players in and hopefully we can do something before the weekend.

“But we’re not going to bring in bodies for the sake of it. They have to improve what we already have.”
