Reds sign Darren Ward

9 January 2015

Defender joins from Swindon until the end of the season

The club are pleased to confirm the signing of experienced defender Darren Ward, who has joined Reds on loan from Swindon Town until the end of the season.

In nearly two decades as a professional, Darren has made nearly 600 career appearances including spells in the Premier League with Watford, Crystal Palace and Wolves. In more than 250 games for Millwall in three separate spells he played in the 2004 FA Cup final alongside current Reds’ midfielder Marvin Elliott.

Darren joined Swindon two years ago and was a regular for the rest of rest of the 2013-14 season, even having a short spell as caretaker player-manager when Paolo Di Canio left the club. Last season he played 45 times for Robins.

Darren is interim manager Dean Saunders’ first signing and he is delighted to have him on board.

“Darren is a winner first and foremost,” said Dean. “He’s experienced and is a very solid defender who knows his own game inside out. He's a warrior and I think he is just what we need. We’ve got a lot of young players in our squad and someone like Darren, who has played a lot of games, is just what we need. We’re really pleased to have him with us.”

Darren will wear squad no. 25.
