Manager's positive message ahead of Chesterfield trip

Reds head to Chesterfield on Tuesday night (7.45pm) looking for a victory which would take us off the bottom of League One.

It could be a big ask against a home side who will go fifth with a win but manager Dean Saunders says he and the players are looking forward to the challenge of ending a run of 14 games without a win in all competitions.

The squad travelled north on Monday to train at Nottingham Forest ahead of their first ever visit to the Proact Stadium.

Dean said: “The longer the run goes on without a win the more nervous we look, you could see that in parts of the performance on Saturday.

“But there were a lot of positives too and those are the things we have to identify and build on. I thought defensively we looked strong and the players we have brought into the squad this month are getting sharper with every game.

“It’s up to me and my staff to find a formula that will get us over the line and enable us to win games. We’ve worked hard on various things since Saturday and it’s no bad thing that we’ve got this game coming up.

“We can’t afford to let spirits slide or start feeling sorry for ourselves. I have stressed to the players since Sunday that the only thing they can do is dig in, work even harder and give themselves the best chance of turning things around.

“I believe there is the quality in the squad to get victories and climb the table. One win would make such a massive difference. I have been involved in these situations as both a player and a manager. We have to stick together as a club, keep believing in what we’re doing and see what happens but I am still as confident I can get us out of trouble as the day I walked through the door.”

Reds have no fresh injury worries but Brian Jensen, Dean Leacock, Conor Henderson and Josh Simpson remain sidelined.
