Reds sign Rooney

23 June 2015

Midfielder is Mark Yates' third signing as he starts second spell with Reds

The club are delighted to announce the signing of Luke Rooney on a one-year contract.

It will be the 24-year-old winger’s second spell with Reds, having played five appearances under former boss Richie Barker in 2013 after he joined the club on loan from Swindon Town.

Luke joined Luton towards the end of the 2013-14 campaign and played six games as they won promotion back to the Football League.

Last season he made 13 appearances for the Hatters, scoring five goals, before he was released in January after undergoing hernia surgery. Luke then went on to play for

Ebbsfleet United before the end of last season.

Luke started his career at Gillingham in 2009 and had three years there prior to joining Swindon.

Manager Mark Yates said: “We’re delighted to have Luke on board. I think he is a very talented footballer and someone whose career I have followed closely since his days at Swindon.

“He had an injury last year which held him back a bit but I saw him several times for Luton and he was outstanding. A lot has changed at Crawley since his loan spell here but

he does know the club and he is really enthusiastic about a new challenge and a fresh start here. He has a lot of qualities on the ball and I can see him playing a big part for us.”

Luke said: "I'm looking forward to showing the Crawley fans what I am capable of. It's almost a case of unfinished business if you like because when I was here before I don't think I started a game.

"I had a very good meeting with Mark and Jimmy. I think I play my best football as a central midfielder and that's the role they want me to play so I am delighted to be here and part of what they are trying to achieve. I'm looking forward to being back for pre-season next week and getting ready for the new season."
