Simon signs for Reds

18 June 2015

Midfielder is Mark Yates' first new signing

The club are delighted to confirm that midfielder Simon Walton has joined Reds on a two-year contract.

Simon passed his medical today and becomes new manager Mark Yates’ first signing since taking over as manager last month.

The 27-year-old has spent the last two seasons in League 2. He made 83 appearances for Hartlepool before joining Stevenage last term, for whom he scored five goals in 33

games.

Simon started his career at Leeds United and joined Charlton in a £500,000 deal in 2004. QPR then paid £200,000 for his services and in 2008 Simon headed to Plymouth, for whom he played 66 times and scored nine goals.

Simon has also played for Ipswich, Hull, Blackpool, Crewe and Sheffield United on loan in an 11-year career which so far has included 294 appearances.

Mark Yates said: “I’m delighted to make my first signing as manager and very pleased it’s Simon, who I think is going to be a terrific asset for us in midfield.

“He’s great in possession and really looks after the ball. He’s also got good set-piece delivery and he knows what this division is all about.

“I saw him a few times for Stevenage last season and I was pleasantly surprised he became available at the end of the season. I’m delighted he’s agreed to come here, he’s

going to play a big part for us.”

Simon said: “It’s great to at the club and I am really looking forward to working with Mark Yates.

“League Two is tough but Mark knows the division well and he has got some exciting plans in terms of the players he wants to bring in and the way he wants to play.

“It’s an exciting challenge at this stage of my career and one I am really looking forward too.”
