Striker Shamir joins Reds

Striker joins his local club on one-year contract

Reds are delighted to confirm the signing of striker Shamir Fenelon, who has joined the club on a one-year contract.

Shamir, 20, started his career with Brighton & Hove Albion, signing a one-year deal in 2012 after a prolific goalscoring record in the club’s youth team.

Shamir made three appearances for the Seagulls and continued his football development with spells on loan at Tonbridge Angels and Torquay United, making 12 League Two appearances for the Plainmoor club and scoring his first League goal against Chesterfield.

Last season he played for Rochdale, making four appearances, League Two Tranmere Rovers, for whom scored two goals in ten starts, and Dagenham & Redbridge. He has also made one appearance for the Republic of Ireland under-21s, debuting in a European Championship qualifier against Andorra earlier this year.

Released by the Seagulls at the end of the season, Shamir is looking forward to re-igniting his career with his local club.

Manager Mark Yates said: “I think Shamir has got a lot of ability. He’s got raw pace and if anything he needs to be a bit more selfish because he gets into a lot of good goalscoring positions and is a real team player.

“I think he’s being quite brave in a way. A lot of clubs were interested in him but he’s a local lad and sometimes that brings its own pressure and extra expectation. He’s

determined to show what he’s about to the Crawley supporters and I’m sure our fans will warm to him.”

Shamir said: “When I spoke to Mark and Jimmy I knew I wanted to come to Crawley. Obviously it’s my local team – I went to school at Thomas Bennett and I played for the club’s old youth teams from the age of 9-14 – which makes it even better.

“I think I have a lot to offer and I’m really looking forward to joining up with the other lads and then showing the Crawley fans what I can do when the pre-season games start.”
