Chief Executive Michael Dunford with the latest on search for a new manager

Chief Executive Michael Dunford has today given an update on the search for a new First Team Manager.

Michael said: “Since the news was released at the weekend that John Gregory was leaving the club I have had in excess of 30 applications for the job and I’m expecting more in the next few days.

Some of these candidates are of the highest calibre and offer a lot of experience in football management.

“This is a very important period in the history of the club. We are obviously disappointed to be preparing for League Two next season but we are determined to embrace the challenge positively and

that will be reflected in our choice of manager.

“We won’t rush things. There are lots of things to consider and the board have some specific criteria that any new manager will have meet.

“However, we are mindful of the fact that we need to make an appointment as soon as possible so the new manager can begin his preparations for next season.

We hope to make an appointment some time next week, but if it takes longer then so be it. We want to be absolutely certain that we have made the right choice.

“I would like to thank our supporters for their patience and especially those who have renewed their season tickets since they went on sale on Monday. Their show of faith in the club is very heartening.”

Dean Saunders, who led Reds in an interim capacity in the second half of the season, has today been appointed the new manager of League One side Chesterfield.

Michael added: "The pull of managing in League One at a club which is a lot closer to where Dean lives proved hard for him to resist and we completely understand his reasons.

"I'd like to thank Dean for all he did for us during his six months at the club and I'm sure our supporters will join me in wishing him all the best for the future.

"We will now move as quickly as we can to appoint the right manager for our club."
