Joe: "A Dream start"

8 August 2016

Hear from Saturday's man of the match...

Reds defender Joe McNerney says that Saturday's opening day victory over Wycombe Wanderers was the perfect way for the club to start the new campaign.

Jimmy Smith's second half goal meant that Dermot Drummy picked up his first win as Reds boss, and McNerney subsequently picked up the man of the match award.

"It’s a dream to get off to a winning start. They were a difficult and direct team to deal with and they’re very good at what they do.

"It was a new (defensive) unit for us with a new goalkeeper behind us too, and it was a real team effort for the clean sheet."

McNerney and the Reds backline had to deal with the sizeable threat of visiting striker Adebayo Akinfenwa for the latter part of the contest, but did so admirably as the hosts completed a shut-out.

"He’s a challenge, but we’ve all played against him and we had a set up and a way of dealing with him."

The next challenge for the side is Tuesday's game against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup at Molineux, and Joe insists that the Reds have nothing to fear from the contest against Walter Zenga's men.

"We’ll be underdogs and they are a massive club and we’ll go and try and play football, anything can happen and it’ll be a good game to watch," added Joe.

"Wycombe are good at forcing you back and they want to be physical and we didn’t get the chance to pass the ball - hopefully it’ll be a different game on Tuesday."
