Barnard convinced strike partnership with mate Harrold can be a hit
Lee Barnard is confident his new partnership with mate Matt Harrold can bring goals as Reds look to climb up the League One table.
They were paired together for the first time in a League 2 game last Saturday and combined when Lee’s scuffed shot was turned in by Matt for the only goal as Town made it seven out of eight at home in the league with victory over Cambridge United. They are hoping to help Reds make it eight out of nine against Notts County on Saturday.
The experienced Barnard, who joined the club last summer, has had to wait for his chance. The form of Harrold and the prolific Rhys Murphy, who scored nine League goals during his pre-Christmas loan spell, meant a difficult time for the former Southampton striker.
“I had to be patient but it was very frustrating – every player who is not in the team will say the same thing whatever club you’re at,” said Lee.
“But I’ve got my opportunity now and I think we’ve got the makings of a good understanding, Matt and I. We’re both clever players and I think I can read his
flick-ons and make the most of his ability in the air to get on the end of things and score goals myself.
“I’m not really a target man, although I am happy to put myself about in that role. I prefer to play off a big striker. Matt and I travel in together to training every day and we talk about it a lot, how we feel we can work together and develop a partnership.
“I’m confident I can score goals if I get a run in the side and hopefully the Gaffer has seen enough in the two games I have played since Christmas to give me a run in the side.”
