Mark on trying to strengthen squad

Boss stays patient as January window draws to a close

Mark Yates believes that dealings by clubs elsewhere during the transfer window could open doors for new faces at the club.

George Smith and Chris Atkinson have already been brought in to bolster his options but he remains hopeful of making more additions before the end of the month.

“January is a funny month, teams talk about signing players and then doors open elsewhere when that happens, players move on and others become available," he said.

The Reds’ boss believes that patience is the key if he’s to bring anyone else into the squad.

“We’re trying to sign players that will add to what we have here, however, it doesn’t come straight away and you do have to be patient," he added.

“Myself and Jimmy Dack are entrusted with making signings that are good for the club and I’m confident that we’ll do that.”

Darryl Flahavan left the club on Thursday after the manager withdrew his contract offer for the goalkeeper, but he insisted that back-up Callum Preston is more than capable of filling the position.

Mark added: “I’m still looking to bring someone in before Saturday, everyone knows I want two keepers.

“But Callum’s done a great job when he’s played, and was perhaps unlucky to lose his place a few times so I’m more than comfortable with Callum stepping in, he knows that.”
