Jimmy named captain

17 July 2016

Midfielder will wear the armband this season

Head Coach Dermot Drummy confirmed after Saturday's friendly against Brighton that midfielder Jimmy Smith will be our captain this season.

The midfielder has worn the armband in all three pre-season games so far and will proudly lead the team out when we kick off our Sky Bet League 2 campaign against Wycombe on August 6.

Dermot said: “Jimmy Smith is our captain. What were his qualities? Maturity and coming back to pre-season training being 100 per cent mentally fit, I have noticed that in him.

“He is at the right stage of his career to lead this team. He cares about Crawley, not just the playing side but the whole club.”

This is Jimmy's third season at the Checkatrade Stadium. He has made 76 League and Cup appearances for Reds, scoring twice. He missed three months action last term with a broken ankle.

Jimmy said: "It's a great honour to be captain of the club.

"Looking at the squad, we've got a good mix of experienced lads like myself, Matty Harrold, Conns (Mark Connolly) and James Collins with some young lads desperate to do well.

"There's a good spirit already and I see one of my jobs to make sure we got out every week as one giving 100% for the shirt.

"Saturday was tough against a good side but pre-season has gone well and around the club there's a bit of a buzz, which perhaps wasn't there for the last couple of years.

"The new owners and the people behind the scenes are working really hard to improve the whole club and make sure we all go forward together."
