Local schools in tournament to celebrate FA Girls Football Week
To celebrate FA Girls Football Week, Crawley Town Community Foundation hosted a five a side tournament for local Primary Schools on the Checkatrade Stadium Community 3G pitch.
Community Foundation staff were joined by Year 5 and 6 students from Southgate, The Oaks, Gossops Green, Southwater (Horsham) and Furzefield (Merstham) for a round robin tournament.
After some close group matches, the day concluded with Southwater and the Oaks taking the final to a sudden-death penalty competition. Southwater emerged as the winners, after an unlucky penalty miss by Oaks.
Each participant received a certificate of attendance and a medal for taking part, as well as some Crawley Town goodies. Young people were also able to meet some of the Crawley Town first team squad as they finished their training session.
As winners of the tournament, Southwater’s squad received two tickets each to a FA Women’s Premier League game between Chelsea Ladies and Liverpool Ladies, as well as a trophy which will now be proudly on display at the school.
Special mention goes to Gossops Green Primary School, who were competing in their first ever tournament and did fantastically well.
Crawley Town Community Foundation would like to thank all the girls for a brilliant day. We hope to see all participants back again in October, as we once again celebrate FA Girls Football Week.
Last Wednesday, Collyers College attended a University and College tournament organised by AFC Wimbledon, at Goals Soccer Centre in Tolworth. Representing Crawley Town through the Female Football Development project, the girls competed against eight other teams including Chelsea’s Development Squad, Gillingham Ladies A and B and a host of University teams.
After some fantastic performances, the girls narrowly missed out on qualification to the semi-finals, finishing in fifth place.
