Collins: We deserved to win

9 October 2016

Striker on Hartlepool draw

Saturday’s goalscorer James Collins felt that his side’s performance deserved all three points against Hartlepool United on Saturday.

The striker scored his seventh goal of the season in the 1-1 draw in the north-east, but insisted the Reds deserved to win on the balance of play.

Reds Player HD. “I had a great chance at the end and the ones we had in the first half were good too,” he told

“On the road you have to take a point because it is a tough place to come.

“The first half is the best we’ve played this year. When you’re on top you have to take your chances.

“The penalty is avoidable because Glenn has made a great save and we haven’t really helped him out.”

The second half saw Collins win a penalty with just under 20 minutes left of the game – but the forward had to wait longer than usual before he converted it.

“He’s given me a nudge in the back and they didn’t seem to argue too much,” Collins continued.

“There was a delay for when I took it – I took it off the spot and replaced it – I knew where I was going to put it.”

Collins also had a golden chance to snatch all three points for Dermot Drummy’s men in the closing stages – but he was denied by Scott Harrison’s last gasp challenge.

“It was an awkward height – I should have done better and we should be going home with three points but we move on to next week now.”
