Connolly: First half disappointing

16 October 2016

Slow start frustrates Reds defender

Mark Connolly admitted that Reds’ first half performance in the 2-1 defeat to Cheltenham Town on Saturday left the side with too much to do to get back into the game.

A third minute strike from Billy Waters meant Dermot Drummy’s men fell behind early in the contest, but on the balance of play Connolly believed the Reds deserved something from the game come the end.

Reds Player HD.“We’re disappointed with the first half – we had a lot of the ball but we didn’t use it as well as we know we can,” he told

“Second half I think we were the much better team – but while we were pushing for a way back into the game we were always chancing leaving ourselves slightly open at the back.

“But we dug in and got back into the game and I thought we were unlucky not to get anything this afternoon.

“There was some sloppy passes and it wasn’t like us."

However, the defender emphasised that next week’s home game with Accrington Stanley was the perfect opportunity to atone for the defeat in Gloucestershire.

“We move on now and hopefully we can put it right," he added.

“We’ll get it right next week but it’s disappointing because we’ve got winners in our dressing room – the manager, the players and all the staff so we have to get it right next Saturday.”
