MATCH PREVIEW | Charlton Athletic

A look ahead to Tuesday evening's Checkatrade Trophy game

29 August 2017

The Reds entertain Charlton Athletic this evening in their first game of their 2017-18 Checkatrade Trophy campaign.

Harry Kewell’s men will face the League One Addicks under the lights looking to build on Saturday’s 3-0 win away to Swindon Town.

Karl Robinson’s men continued their good start to the league season with a 2-0 victory away at Rotherham United on Saturday.

If the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes both sides will get a point each and the game will go straight to a penalty shootout - with the winners of that getting an extra point.

The Opposition:

Charlton have made a decent start to their League One campaign, winning four out of their first five matches as they seek a return to the Championship.

They began the season at home to Bristol Rovers, securing a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Patrick Bauer, despite losing Lee Novak to a red card just six minutes in.

Three days later they won 2-1 at Exeter City in the Carabao Cup, but crashed out in the second round last Tuesday when they lost 4-1 at Norwich despite going in front early on in the game.

Their league campaign resumed the following weekend, but they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Plymouth Argyle. A week later they got back to winning ways, thumping Northampton Town 4-1 at The Valley, with Josh Magennis and Ricky Holmes netting before Jake Foster-Caskey bagged a brace in stoppage time.

Last season the Addicks finished 13th in the division following their relegation from the Championship.

We’ve played Charlton Athletic before in this competition 10 months ago - the Reds came out 2-0 winners at The Valley with goals from Adi Yussuf and James Collins.
