"We grew up together and we've always been close"

Harry Kewell on relationship with Warren Feeney and his own time with Watford

4 June 2017

Harry Kewell revealed that his Assistant Coach Warren Feeney has been a close friend since their early days in the game when he met the media last Friday.

The newly installed Head Coach at the Checkatrade Stadium was keen to highlight the pair's friendship from an early age and emphasised their bond.

"We grew up and came through the youth ranks together at Leeds United," he revealed.

"We formed a friendship back then and keeping that bond within football can sometimes be rare – I was also best man at his wedding so we’ve always been close.

"We both know what’s at stake here and we both know it’s an opportunity, and we understand what’s needed."

With Feeney having nearly 250 league appearances to his name, the Australian was keen to point out that experience as being vital going forward into the new season.

"I was asked to bring someone in and I feel Warren has the experience in areas which I may not necessarily have yet on and off the field.

"Warren has a mind of his own and isn’t afraid to speak it and that’s something I like."

Kewell's previous managerial role came with the Watford U23 side, and he revealed what he'd picked up from his time at the Hornets.

"I learnt how to prepare – I also found that you can make preparations as thorough as possible and then that can quickly go out the window and so I also learned to adapt.

"That means that I’m not afraid of changing things around either. If things aren’t going well for whatever reason then I’m happy to make changes."
