A look back at the fifth month of the 2016/17 campaign

5 June 2017

The Reds scored seven goals in the month of December as the 2016/17 campaign reached the end of the calendar year.

The month began with a comprehensive 5-0 defeat away to Yeovil Town, before the side bowed out of the Checkatrade Trophy in the Round of 32 stage away to Coventry City, losing 1-0 at the Ricoh Arena.

The first victory of the month came in a 2-0 success away to Crewe Alexandra thanks to a goal in either half from James Collins. He volleyed home stylishly from inside the area in the opening period, before a defensive mistake allowed the forward to slot into an empty net from Billy Clifford's assist in the second half.

A week later the Reds recorded a 3-1 home win over Newport County - Collins' was on the scoresheet once more when he headed in Jordan Roberts' cross minutes into the game to give the hosts the lead.

After Newport equalised, Josh Yorwerth headed home Jimmy Smith's cross from the right to put the Reds back in front - before Smith then added a well taken goal of his own to give Dermot Drummy's men the win.

Boxing Day saw the side lose out 3-2 away to Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road - the side trailed 3-0 at the break before and own goal from Teddy Mezague and Enzio Boldewijn's cool finish gave them a way back into the game. But it was the East Londonders who held on for the victory.

The year 2016 ended with a 2-0 defeat away to Plymouth Argyle - the absence of Head Coach Dermot Drummy through illness meant Matt Gray took charge in Devon.

Oscar Threlkeld and Craig Tanner gave Argyle the victory at Home Park, despite a spirited performance from the away side.
