Jimmy Smith reflects on Wigan defeat and previews Forest Green Rovers

8 November 2017

We caught up with the skipper on Wednesday to get his thoughts on the Emirates FA Cup exit and his look ahead to the weekend's game with Forest Green Rovers as the Reds are back in league action.

The midfielder also reflected on the return of striker Thomas Verheydt following his prolonged period of injury after he has been back in action over the last week....

Jimmy on Forest Green Rovers...

Saturday is a massive game – we’re looking for three points because it is a must win game. We need to start well and get at them straight away and get the fans behind us and be in the front foot.

We’re working on situations this week on shape and where we should be man for man and structurally across the pitch. Everyone’s looking sharp and we’re all looking forward to the weekend.

They struggled at the start of this season but have improved and it just shows that anyone can beat anyone in this league. I don’t think you can read into the table too much at the moment so we just have to be fully focused on ourselves and our jobs.

Jimmy on Wigan Athletic defeat...

At the end of the game we went into the changing room disappointed that we lost the game in the end - to go to a team like Wigan and perform the way we did was good especially as they’re in the top half of League One.

They have a history of doing well in the FA Cup, and they won it in 2013 so there were plenty of positives to take.

We took the lead and were disappointed to go in level at the break. We had a good number of chances and had a good base to build on from the back whilst catching them on the counter attack but mistakes cost us.

Jimmy on Thomas Verheydt returning from injury...

He’s been out for a long time and it’s nice to have him back. It’s been frustrating for him because he’s come to a new country and a new club, but he’s kept working hard since he’s been out.

He came on at the weekend and hopefully he can have an impact this Saturday as well.
