Reds have been drawn with League One clubs Portsmouth and Gillingham in the group stages of the Checkatrade Trophy.
The fourth invited team will be revealed next Wednesday at 1pm when the group will be completed by one of the following under-21 teams:
Brighton & Hove Albion U21
Swansea City U21
Tottenham Hotspur U21
West Ham United U21
The invited team will play all their games away from home.
The format for this year’s competition is much the same as 2017/18, with only a couple of small changes to the Regulations. Players from EFL clubs who are out on loan in the National League and below are now eligible to feature in the competition, while invited teams have been restricted to fielding two players over the age of 21 and more than 40 first-team appearances.
The first round of group fixtures is scheduled for week beginning September 3.
