PREVIEW: CHECKATRADE TROPHY ACTION AT GILLINGHAM ON TUESDAY

12 November 2018

The Reds are the road for the second time in four days as we head to Kent to take on Gillingham in the final match of the Checkatrade Trophy group stage.

Both sides were in FA Cup action on Saturday and will require replays if they are to get through to the second round. The Reds held League One side Southend United to a 1-1 draw at Roots Hall, while the Gills drew 0-0 with National League side Hartlepool United.

GROUP STAGE PERMUTATIONS

Crawley MUST win at Priestfield if they are to progress to the next round. However, a win may still not be enough if Tottenham Hotspur U21s pick up a point away at Portsmouth as they have a superior goal difference of five.

We must win and Tottenham must lose. Gillingham are already out, while Portsmouth have already qualified.

HEAD TO HEAD

Gillingham and Crawley have faced each other eight times since 2012,  two of which have come in this competition. The first of those was in September 2012 when the Reds ran out 3-2 winners thanks to goals from Joe Walsh, Billy Clarke, and Scott Neilson. The other Checkatrade Trophy match came four years ago yesterday when Gillingham recorded a 2-1 win at the Broadfield. Izale McLeod gave us the lead with a penalty but the Kent side turned it around with goals from Jermaine McGlashan and Doug Loft.

In the other eight meetings, all in the league, Gillingham have won four, Crawley three, with one draw. Crawley’s last victory in Kent was in March 2012, when Dannie Bulman’s goal sealed a 1-0 win.

ONE TO WATCH

Tom Eaves is the top scorer in Sky Bet League One with 11 goals and has been in fine form in both league and cup. He signed for the Gills in the summer of 2017 from Yeovil Town and his goalscoring tally from this season comes after an impressive 17 last season for the Kent club. He was with Bolton before his move to Yeovil and he spent time on loan at Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury- for whom he once scored a second-half hat-trick against Reds - Rotherham and Bury. He has scored four goals in his last three league games.
