SAM MATTHEWS | TEN QUESTIONS

We caught up with Sam Matthews on all things Crawley, TV and food.

How has life at Crawley been since you arrived in the summer?

“I have really enjoyed my time here so far, we have a good group where everyone gets on and there is a good atmosphere within the squad, obviously winning games helps with that so hopefully we can get as many results as possible and keep climbing the league table.”

How have you found working with the gaffer and Lee Bradbury over the past few months?

“Working with the gaffer and Bradders has been great. I obviously knew the gaffer from previously which helps and I feel they know me as a player so I can just play my game. They’re both very positive which is great.”

After having time to settle in, what are you aspirations for your time here at Crawley?

“I just want to play as many games for the club and help the team do as well as possible. Hopefully this year we can climb up the league and push towards the play off spots and promotion. I definitely feel we have the potential to do that with the squad we have.”

Favourite footballing memory?

“Favourite footballing memory would probably be either winning players’ player of the season at Eastleigh or making my league debut for Bristol Rovers away at Wycombe. Both good memories.”

Footballing idol growing up?

“Growing up I loved Ronaldinho because of how he played and then as I’ve got older I’d definitely say Messi just because in my opinion I think he’s the best player of all time.”

Closest teammates in the camp?

“I feel I get on well with everyone really and we’ve got a really tight knit squad but I lived with Sam Ashford in the clubhouse for a bit in pre season and we get on well. I’m also close with Tommy Nichols and Jordan Tunnicliffe and we have a little coffee club going when covid restrictions allow, so I would have to say them too! In terms of funniest would definitely have to say Dannie Bulman as he makes me laugh most days to be honest.”

Favourite Reds memory so far?

“Morecambe at home was a good game, I think it was only my 2nd start but we won 4-0 at home and played some really good stuff  and ended up going on a really good run off the back of it. So that was a good memory, hopefully plenty more to come especially with fans now being able to come back into the stadium!”

Favourite music?

“Music taste I’d say mostly hip-hop or rnb, don’t mind a bit of house music too but listen to a bit of all sorts really.”

Best TV shows and films?

“For TV shows I would have to say the office and only fools and horses which never gets old for me. Film wise I think Hitch is a great film, also like Inception and more recently A Star is Born.”

Favourite foods?

“I enjoy a lot of Mediterranean food, also really like Thai food if I’m eating out. Before games I try to keep it pretty simple and healthy, usually some sort of chicken/fish with veg and some carbs!”
