PREVIEW | CAMBRIDGE UNITED

A look ahead at tomorrow's opponents

30 October 2020

SCENE SETTER

Reds are ready for their tenth Sky Bet League Two fixture of the season as we take on high-flying Cambridge United tomorrow afternoon at The People’s Pension Stadium.

FORM GUIDE

After the Reds ran out as 4-0 victors over league leaders Morecambe two weeks ago at The People’s Pension Stadium, in a game where the Reds arguably played their best football of the season so far, we again won 4-0 at home in a spectacular performance against Tranmere Rovers.

Following two tough away trips to Exeter City and Salford City within the space of one week, and only picking up one point on the road, the Reds returned to West Sussex looking to get back to winning ways. In an unbelievable opening 25 minutes, we found ourselves three goals up, with Max Watters, Tom Nichols and Jordan Tunnicliffe all finding the back of the net against a worn-out Tranmere side.

Tyler Frost returned to the side and made it 4-0 in the second-half, completing the scoreline and boosting us up to ninth in the Sky Bet League Two table.

Tomorrow’s opposition, Cambridge United, sit 2nd in the league table, after an impressive start to the season, scoring 21 and conceding only 5.

The U’s are unbeaten in their previous five league games, winning 4 times against the likes of Port Vale, Newport and Walsall, trams that have also started brightly. Cambridge’s only league defeat of the season so far came at St James’ Park; where Exeter City won 2-0 with two first-half goals.

THE HISTORY

Since 2014, the sides have met on ten occasions, with Crawley winning four times. We last played the U’s at The People’s Pension Stadium in October of 2018, where goals from Luke Gambin and Ollie Palmer were enough to secure a 2-0 victory.

Last season, the Reds took a second-half lead at Abbey Stadium through Bez Lubala, but late goals from Sam Smith and Paul Lewis, both now of Tranmere Rovers, turned the game around for the U’s, achieving a 2-1 home victory.

THE OPPOSITION

Paul Mullin has enjoyed an incredible start to the season in League Two, scoring 11 times in 9 appearances, with a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Port Vale, and braces against Scunthorpe, Morecambe and league leaders Newport County.

Mullin is often partnered with Joe Ironside, who scored from the spot in last week’s clash against Walsall, in a game that the U’s won 2-0.

The U’s are captained by defender Greg Taylor, who has kept six clean sheets so far this season in all competitions.

TEAM NEWS

There are no new injury worries within the squad. Reece Grego-Cox remains absent after the injury he picked up at Exeter City last season.
