THE OPPOSITION

Tottenham Hotspur’s U23s finished third in last season’s Premier League 2 Division 1, a huge improvement on what had been a stale set of mid-table finishes in the years prior. They are managed by former Plymouth Argyle, Grimsby Town and Huddersfield Town midfielder Wayne Burnett who has been in the position since July 2017. Crawley last faced the young Spurs outfit a little over 11 months ago and played out an entertaining 2-2 draw behind closed doors at Spurs’ Training Centre. The hosts took a two-goal lead into the final minutes before two quickfire strikes from Ricardo German and Manny Adebowale earned the Reds a draw.

OUR PRE-SEASON SO FAR

We began our 2021/22 pre-season schedule with a trip to Walton Casuals on July 6. It was a confident opener that we won 0-3 with goals from a trialist forward and a Tom Nichols brace. Next we made the short trip to Horley Town four days later and again were far the better side, winning 1-6 after the hosts took an early shock lead. Goals this time were scored by Ashley Nadesan, Sam Matthews, Zaid Al-Hussaini and a trialist hat-trick.

Within the space of four days we took on three more local sides in Burgess Hill, Three Bridges and Horsham. Burgess Hill proved a very strong side and held a mixed Crawley side to a 1-1 draw. Next we took on Three Bridges who again were a tough, physical side who played with real passion and menace, as Crawley left Jubilee Field with a tight 0-1 victory.

It was our battle with Horsham that was our most encouraging game so far, as Yems’ Crawley shone from the whistle, smashing the home side 0-5 in familiar territory at the Camping World Community Stadium - our training base again for the season ahead. Goals were scored by Tom Nichols, Jack Powell, Sam Matthews, Jake Hessenthaler and Tyler Frost in what can only be described as a devastating performance.

Lastly on Saturday we travelled to East Grinstead, and were again able to achieve a clean sheet in a solid showing that involved many of our younger exciting prospects and trialists. Goals were scored by Sam Ashford, Davide Rodari and the same trialist that put three past Horley Town.

On Monday we hosted West Ham’s U23 side, and finished as 2-1 victors thanks to goals from a trialist and substitute Sam Ashford.
