We spoke to coach Darren Byfield about his time at the club so far

20 October 2022

How would you sum up your time here so far?

“I’ve really enjoyed it, it’s a family club with really good people. Obviously the only thing we need now is to pull away from the bottom of the league.”

What do you make of the group of players and staff at Crawley?

“The staff, players and fans have been superb. The staff and players actually make going into work enjoyable and there’s a great work ethic within both groups.”

How has it been within the squad since Lewis Young took interim charge?

“The boys have taken on what Lewis wants from them and implemented it into training and match day. They’ve had a good start and we hope they keep on working with the same intensity and continue their good form.”

What did you make of our victories over Newport and Aston Villa U21?

“The boys came out on the front foot in both games even though we went behind in the Villa game. They have got after both teams and deserved both victories but we have to continue this so we can climb up the table.”

How important have the fans been in sticking with the team despite poor results?

“I know it’s a cliche but the fans have been our 12th man and showed when they are singing their hearts out they will give every player the energy to get after teams and help turn our ground into a fortress.”

Which player(s) have you been most impressed with on the pitch this season?

“Tom Nichols and James Balagizi have been superb, Nico has led the team so well, his performances and work rate have been exemplary and he’s scored some important goals as well. Hopefully Balagizi will be back from injury soon and can continue his good form and help the boys to more wins.”

Which player has had the worst dress sense this season?

“This is so tough because there are a few that look like they got dressed in the Dark, it’s not right for me to mention any names so Marshie [Mark Marshall], Dom [Telford] and Brandon [Mason] should be happy I didn’t mention them!”

Which player/staff member has the worst banter?

“Haha you’re setting me up here! The staff have to stick together so I’m going to take the Fifth!”

What are the goals of the team and yourself for the season ahead now?

“Our goals are to keep demanding everything from the players day in and day out so we can get ourselves up the table because we know we have a squad that can achieve that. For me on a personal level I will continue to help the squad on and off the pitch and give all I can alongside the rest of the staff for us to be successful this season.”
