REPORT | BARROW AFC 4-0 CRAWLEY TOWN

Crawley beaten by the Bluebirds in Cumbria

10 April 2023

Crawley’s long-haul trip to Barrow ended in one to forget this afternoon as the Red Devils lost out 4-0 in a disappointing Easter Monday performance.

Josh Gordon scored a hat-trick for the hosts before Gerard Garner netted a fourth with a looping header after 81 minutes.

Crawley started with some hope and determination and after nine minutes, Jack Powell fired a fierce low free-kick just an inch wide from range, winning Crawley their first corner.

However, it took 17 minutes for the home side to take the lead when Elliot Newby picked out an unmarked Josh Gordon in the area who poked home from a yard out to score his 13th league goal of the season.

Just seven minutes later, Barrow put the ball in the net again but the goal was ruled out after Gerard Garner was shown a yellow card for a handball in the build-up.

Jack Roles tripped Newby just outside the Crawley box on the half-hour mark and Garner’s shot from the free-kick flew just wide of the post.

A minute before the half-time break, Caleb Chukwuemeka was replaced by Dom Telford.

Aramide Oteh was introduced in place of Jack Roles but within two minutes of the second-half a long throw-in was nodded into the path of Gordon who netted his second of the afternoon to make the score 2-0.

Travis Johnson conceded a penalty in the 55th minute after he tripped his man in the box as a dangerous cross came in. Gordon secured a hat-trick from the spot as the ball struck the hand of Addai before hitting the back of the net.

On the hour mark James Tilley and Anthony Grant were both introduced in place of Tom Fellows and Rafiq Khaleel.

Crawley continued to struggle and after an hour of play there were still no chances going forward of any note.

Another 15 minutes progressed and Crawley’s fortune was not changing, with the team failing to gel or create any notable chances or attacking sequences.

With ten minutes to go Lindsey made his fifth and final change as captain Jack Powell came off and Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Jack Spong entered the fray.

Just after the change, Barrow made it four as a defensive mix-up led to Addai stopping the shot of Young before Garner headed in the rebound.

Aramide Oteh was booked with minutes remaining for a push off the ball. An element of frustration on display.

Crawley now sit within the relegation spots in 23rd place after Colchester United, Harrogate Town and Hartlepool United all picked up points elsewhere.

Reds XI: Addai; Mason, Ransom, Johnson, Mazeed; Khaleel (Grant 61’), Powell (Spong 81’), Fellows (Tilley 61’), Roles (Oteh 46’); Chukwuemeka (Telford 45’), Nadesan.
